Cheshire 12 v 27 Lancashire 18 Group

Sunday 3rd November, Sandbach RUFC

Lancashire returned to winning form with an emphatic second half display at Sandbach.  The score might have been greater had the penalty count been more even but Lancashire’s lack of discipline, particularly at the ruck, contributed to 18 penalties conceded in total. With the big game against Yorkshire looming, this habit will have to be broken quickly – the game is difficult enough without letting the opposition gain possession and territory easily.

The second half performance was based on the simple premise of sticking to the game-plan, maintaining possession and gaining territory by working through the phases and then making effective decisions at the right time. Second half tries by Rob Drake, Joe Sinclair and Lewis Leach were all scored after excellent support play, good interchanges between forwards and backs and building momentum through the phases.

First half tries by Charlie Greene and Matt Wilkinson saw Lancashire lead 12-7 at half time with Tom Morgan converting the first try. The first half was scrappy and untidy but the Cheshire try before half time, to pull the back the deficit to just five points ensured that the large crowd’s interest would be maintained.

Mention should be made of the thunderous tackle by Kilby in midfield that enabled Sinclair to eventually score his try. There were several notable performances, and the North Division selectors must have been impressed.

The Battle of the Roses is at Blackburn RUFC on Sunday 17th November, KO 2pm. It’s one game not to miss!
