Lancashire’s Fairbrother on tour to Canada

Fairbrother

David Fairbrother will represent Lancashire when England Counties start their tour of Canada later this week.

Fairbrother is the only Lancashire player in the 27-man squad who kick-off against BC Bears in Vancouver on Friday.

England Counties offers players from National League One and below the opportunity to represent their country and the Fylde back row is no stranger to high profile encounters.

The Royal Marine helped inspire a dramatic Royal Navy comeback against the Army last month at Twickenham in front of over 80,000 spectators and lifted the man of the match award.

The 28-year-old combines his playing career and military service, paying tribute to his employer.

“I’ve been lucky when big games come up and been given time off. I was lucky to have a few months off to prepare for the Navy game and I’m well supported. I’ve reached a level where work is happy to let me play rugby as the sport is a big part of my life.

“The Royal Navy rugby development system provides me with the stability and continuity to develop. It provides high profile games against players who have experience at international and Premiership level. The Navy is very supportive of their players who make it at senior national clubs.”

The corporal, who started his playing career with Fleetwood, admits his military career took priority during his mid-20s but feels his best rugby years are yet to come.

“It does come to a point when work needs to be the priority. Afghanistan took up four years of my life but I’m approaching 30 and that’s when you peak. I’m going to keep going whilst I’m on top of my game and I’m looking to improve over the next few years.”

The three-match tour concludes with games against Prairie Wolf Pack in Calgary and the Ontario Blues. The side will also take part in community outreach projects while in Canada to help grow the sport.
